Manage Your Mind

When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, many people say, “I know what to do … I just don’t do it!”

We know we should fill half the plate with fruits and vegetables.

We know exercising is important.

We know water is healthier than sugary beverages.

When knowledge isn’t the issue, it’s time to look at things differently. It’s time to work on mind management!

How can you help your students or clients use mind management to achieve their nutrition, health, and fitness goals? You can start with the following messages, which are communicated through our motivational posters:

I Am motivational poster

  • Forgiving a setback: When you overindulge or skip a workout, acknowledge it and move on. Beating yourself up makes it harder to get back on track.
  • Not giving up: When you get discouraged, think about what’s going well for you. You may not be losing weight, but do you have more energy or feel more comfortable in your clothes?
  • Planning and working to success: Even if you know what to do, you need a plan and you need to keep working on it. A healthy lifestyle is a life-long process.

Mindful Eating poster

  • Why am I eating? Ask yourself this question when you reach for food or beverages. Take time to figure out if you’re truly hungry.
  • Enjoy the experience: Don’t rush through meals and snacks. Savor every bite. Slow down, put your food on a plate, sit down.

Keep a Healthy Mindset poster

  • I can do it: Positive, compassionate self-talk is key to mind management.
  • Never quit: Nobody is perfect; giving up is not an option.

Everybody Needs a Break

We need to give people a break. A break from pop-up ads proclaiming the latest miracle food. A break from digital billboards along the highway that alternate between sculpted bodies selling gym memberships and McDonald’s French fries. A break from commercials and spam telling them what to eat and what not to eat.

Give them a break with our “I Am…” poster! It’s the antidote to the noisy, conflicting, all-or-nothing messages about food and health that we’re all bombarded with every day.

“I Am…” is a motivational health poster that emphasizes the steps on your journey to a life of health and well-being. Affirmations serve as gentle reminders for:

  • Self-care: sleeping enough, forgiving a setback.
  • Diet: eating mindfully when hungry, loving fruits & veggies.
  • Physical activity: moving more, exercising consistently.
  • Attitude: not giving up.
  • Intention: planning and working to success.

Here are five ways to use the “I Am…” poster with your clients:

  • It’s perfect for a weight management group that meets regularly: start each meeting with participants sharing which affirmation they identify with most that day.
  • It’s a good ice breaker for an individual or group session: which affirmation is speaking to you today?
  • It’s a goal setting helper: which affirmation do you want to work on?
  • It’s a take-home message: take a picture of the poster with your cell phone and look at it frequently throughout the day.
  • It’s a question: one step starts your journey – what will your one step be today?

Comfort Zone Poster for Motivation and Success

The dictionary defines a comfort zone as a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress. From the context of a healthy diet and lifestyle, the comfort zone is like being in neutral. You are not really learning or doing anything new or going anywhere. You are staying the same. For most individuals, according to CDC statistics, that can be trouble.

Health educators always indicate in surveys that the greatest challenge is getting someone to implement new strategies for better health. Maybe it is learning to shop or cook. Or to make better choices when eating out. Or to get some sort of exercise routine.

So we made this fun and colorful poster that is positive and motivational. It helps people make smart goals and to realize that their current state is beautiful and comfortable. But nothing is happening!

Here are some fun activity ideas:

Ask everyone to share their best comfort zone. Could it be popcorn and the movies, skipping workouts, eating out, eating a certain food that is hard to control portions yet high in calories, not getting enough sleep, or working too much?

The best part is that the group will connect by sharing the things that make them happy but keep them from accomplishing their goals.

Work on the SMART method of goal planning. Ask everyone to work either individually or in groups and to come up with SMART goals. It is always really motivating to hear what others want to do and how they will do it. Can they even work in a group after class?

Have them make a motivation note. What are the reasons to want to do more and get more healthy? Is it a job you want to be your best for? A spouse, family, or kids? Or just a dream you want to accomplish.
